Pre-conference Maritiem MuseumPreconference Martime Museum, Rotterdam
Museums have been working together for many years now, for instance by developing joint exhibitions or by exchanging items on loan. But cooperation offers so many more possibilities. What happens if we take a more creative approach towards opportunities for cooperation within the digital field? Is it really a case of 1+1=3? This afternoon is first and foremost an inspiration session. Three speakers, three short assignments and lots of new ideas.
Maritime Digital: from pitfalls to pinnacles
The MMR launched Maritime Digital a few years ago. The website enables museums to come together to bring their collections to the internet. What links the museums is the similarities between their collections. The talk involves a brief explanation of the programme, what the collaboration involves and how it is not just limited to the Netherlands. We will talk about the history, the benefits and drawbacks. We will present examples of other museums that have entered into similar partnerships.
We all live in the same region
For some time now, several Dutch museums have had a website on which they jointly present their collections. While Maritime Digital is based on museums with similar collections, geographical location was the starting point in these cases. The question is: should these website only be limited to museums? What would happen if other parties also took part in these projects? How far could you go? Working with your public
In addition to collaborating with your colleagues, working together with the public represents a new approach. Use their knowledge to increase your own knowledge about the collection. We will be talking about a number of projects in which contributions from the public are used to increase knowledge. What are the dos and don’ts? How do you go about developing this type of project? But, most importantly, what do you do with the information you gather from the public? The ultimate collaboration: working with museums and working with your public
We have heard how, as museums, you can work together when it comes to collections. We have come up with ideas about how public knowledge can be used in the museum, but how do we link up this information? Can we organise an exchange of public responses between museums in the future? Can visitors to various locations link up their experiences? We will be examining these possibilities from a technical point of view. We will be discussing a new module in which information provided by the public becomes a fully fledged part of your registration system, and how this could become available within collection search systems on the internet.
And afterwards
Each participant receives an ‘inspiration book': a small notepad in which to write down answers to the questions, note down addresses and collect business cards. By the end of the afternoon, we hope that your notebook will be full of inspirational ideas and addresses of interesting people to work with. Maximum number of participants:
